Trucking leaders join together to identify HR challenges
CTHRC strategic planning exercise establishes proposed direction and plans for three to five years
OTTAWA (ON), July 2010 – Leaders from Canada’s trucking industry joined together in Ottawa this month, identifying the Human Resources challenges they feel the industry is facing, and helping the Canadian Trucking Human Resources Council (CTHRC) to establish the strategies that will address these issues.
The group included members of the Council’s Board of Directors as well as several other industry leaders.
“Our Board of Directors already includes representatives from every industry sector, but we wanted to reach out to a wider group to ensure that we gathered as much insight as possible,” said CTHRC Executive Director Linda Gauthier.
Participants in the facilitated discussions identified the industry’s key HR issues, challenges, questions and opportunities, and recommended related strategies. They also developed measures of success and set timelines for every action.
The feedback will help to set the CTHRC’s direction for the next three to five years, and give the trucking industry the opportunity to access federal and provincial financial resources which may be available to meet an array of needs.
“Human Resources initiatives play a vital role in the success of Canada’s trucking industry, particularly in recessionary times,” Gauthier added. “They influence everything from highway safety to productivity, profitability and every other measure that you can imagine. This strategic planning exercise will help us to address the potential barriers to success.”
Industry representatives included in the consultations were:
• Bruce Dimmel, The TDL Group, Tim Hortons (ON)
• Shane Esson, Keltic Transport (NB)
• Clayton Gording, Reimer Express Lines (MB)
• Mike Millian, Hensall District Co-operative (ON)
• Steve Ropp, Molson Canada (ON)
• Mark Seymour, Kriska Transportation (ON)
• Scott Smith, JD Smith and Sons (ON)
Industry veteran Gord Box of Gordon Box Consulting Inc. also participated in his capacity as the CTHRC Business Development Strategy consultant.
The strategic planning session also involved members of CTHRC’s Executive Committee including Phil Benson of Teamsters Canada (ON), Bob Dolyniuk of the Manitoba Trucking Association (MB), Gord Peddle of Atlantica Diversified Transportation Systems (NL), Kevin Riley of Maple Leaf Consumer Foods (ON) and Bruce Richards of the Private Motor Truck Council of Canada (ON).
The session was facilitated by Tony Nash of Inter-Connex Consulting Inc. and included Ivano Andriani of Nova Scotia-based HR 4 Hire/Pragmatic HR Solutions, another CTHRC contractor.
Recommended actions will be formally presented to the CTHRC’s Board of Directors this fall.
