Closing the Gap


Take a glance at the Canadian trucking industry and you will quickly learn that an adequate supply of qualified truck drivers is one of the trucking industry’s highest priorities. The Canadian Trucking Human Resources Council (CTHRC) recognized the need to address this priority with the introduction of the Closing the Gap initiative.

Phase 1, which included a combined effort from industry stakeholders and provincial/territorial and federal governments, researched the issues and attempted to address the barriers that hinder the development of the trucking workforce.

CTHRC released the following discussion papers to help focus related discussions during a national meeting in February 2006.

Phase 2 reviewed the strategies of each jurisdiction, and incorporated workshops to discuss the progress around Phase 1’s five key recommendations and themes. A parallel initiative summarized the licensing requirements of each jurisdiction, and analyzed the gaps between these licensing requirements and the National Occupational Standard for entry-level drivers.
